Our Favorite Towns
Portland, OR
Edging out Pasadena for my No. 1 pick is Portland, a city that perfectly encompasses almost every possible nuance of Arts and Crafts culture. First come the houses, which in Portland run from sturdy Foursquares to Japanese-influenced bungalows to Mediterranean and faux-thatch-roofed Tudor Revivals. Arts and Crafts neighborhoods radiate out from the downtown center on both sides of the Willamette River (the Heights on the west; Sellwood, Irvington, Laurelhurst, Alameda, and dozens of others to the east.) Portland is home to Rejuvenation, House of Antique Hardware, Schoolhouse Electric, Period Arts Fan Co., and many more.
